Perry Trip 2023 - After Action Report
The Arizona Rifle Team trip to the National Matches at Camp Perry, OH 2023
The National Matches have been held at Camp Perry in northern OH almost every year, except for a few wartime years, since 1907. Run by the organization now known as the CMP, with about a 1000 competitors, the National Matches are the most prestigious and best attended precision shooting event in the western hemisphere!
There were 6 AZ Juniors, the “Scorpions”, and 8 or 10 AZ adults competing.
The week of shooting consists of a practice day, 2 individual matches and 3 team matches.
This year
the Sunday practice day was cut short when a rain storm
started, so we did not get a chance to confirm out 600yd
zeros. We had a coupla very rainy evenings, but for the
most part, all the matches went on as scheduled. I think
the Junior Team match had to be put on hold half way
through and completed the next day due to rain.
Monday was the “President’s Match”, a 30-shot match consisting of 10 shots standing at 200yds, 10 shots rapid fire prone at 300yds and 10 shots prone slow fire at 600yds. The top 100 competitors earn the right to wear the “President’s Hundred” badge. Arizonans Kade J and Jeff S were in the top 100 shooters, Kade J made it into the shoot off and ended up in 3rd place overall.
Tuesday was the “National Trophy individual Match”, a 50 shot match adding 10 shots rapid fire sitting at 200yds to the above “President’s” course of fire and doubling the 600yd string to 20 shots (this is called the “National Match Course” of fire). The top 10% of the competitors in this match progress towards the very prestigious “Distinguished Rifleman” badge. Arizonan Kade J came in 16th place in this event, and Mark M took 85th place. (both already distinguished).
Wednesday is a match called “Hearst Doubles” it is the same 30-shot “president’s” course of fire above, but fired as a two-man team with each shooter coaching the other. Among the adult Arizona Shooters there were 3 teams competing with the AZ team of Trace W and Dave F coming in 55th place as the top AZ team, out of 250 teams. There was also a Junior two-man team match shooting the 50-shot National Match course of fire, each team had a dedicated non-shooting adult coach or two. The 3 Arizona Junior teams competed under the Rio Salado club name with team “Rio Salado White” coming in 9th place, shooters Tate B and Avery M coached by Ken R and Myles G.
Thursday was the National Trophy Team match. A 6-man team firing the 50-shot National Match course of fire. Shooting under the Arizona Rifle & Pistol Association name, the AZ adults came in 17th place and the Scorpions junior team came in 22nd place. On Friday we shot the National Trophy Infantry Trophy Team match, this is an all rapid fire match with 6 shooters, 8 targets, starting at 600 yds and moving forward to 500yd, then 300yd and optionally 200yd. Both the AZ Adult team and Az Junior team put a lot of effort into practicing for this one. NTIT is the most “team” oriented of the matches we shoot. There were 21 teams competing for score. The AZ adults came in 9th place and the Scorpions 12th place. There were also 27 out of competition teams.
