At
the National Championships at Camp Perry OH, each days match begins
with a ceremony called "colors"
I would like to conduct a similar ceremony here in Phoenix at the
beginning of our state championships
This will be at the High power Range at Ben Avery Shooting Facility at
I-17 & Carefree hwy in north Phoenix.
it will consist of a cannon shot first thing in the morning at 200 yds.
immediately followed by a flag raising (either on a windage flag pole
or on a temporary flagpole on the range-master tower) and the playing
of the national anthem while the competitors stand at attention.
I would like a crew, probably civil war re-enactors, with a full size
cannon to conduct a "colors" ceremony. The crew can wear any uniform,
blue or grey is acceptable, however it will be a modern US flag that is
raised. The flag raising can be handled by the crew of volunteer
re-enactors, by volunteer boy scouts or by our own junior team. We can
probably find our own flag and music and player. BUT we need a CANNON
and volunteer crew!
I would like this service at one or more of our state matches (by
priority)
- Washington's Birthday Match (the longest running match
in the country) (2nd sunday in February)
- Service Rifle Championships (usually 3rd saturday in
January)
- State High Power Championships (sautrday after
thanksgiving)
- Regional High Power Championships (usually 3rd saturday
in march)
We cannot afford to pay more than a token amount, perhaps we can pay
for 2 to 4 re-enactors range fees at Ben Avery's Public range so they
can go shoot their percussion rifles and cap and ball revolvers for the
rest of the day :)
If you know of a group of artillery re-enactors who would like to
perform this ceremony, we'd love to hear form you
